C.S. 루이스의 『스크루테이프의 편지』 북위크, 마지막 책모임

사랑하는 기도 가족에게 올립니다.

숨만 쉬어도 땀이 흐르는 무더운 여름에 다들 어떻게 지내고 계신지요? 라브리는 산속이라 그런지 다행히 해가 지면 서늘해지기에, 학기가 끝난 지금은 간사들도 앞마당에서 밤 산책을 즐기곤 합니다. 풀벌레 소리를 음악 삼아 걷다 보면 이내 라브리 곳곳에 깃든 이야기들이 생각납니다. 탈진하여 왔지만 돌아갈 때는 환한 미소와 함께 저희를 꼭 안아주던 손님, 가슴 아프도록 소리 없이 떠난 손님, 매일 저녁 부지런히 출동하던 ‘개밥클럽’ 멤버들 등, 올여름에도 새로운 이야기들이 차곡차곡 쌓여갔습니다. 손님 한 분 한 분이 가져온 고민과 문제가 하나님의 거대한 구원 이야기 속에서 앞으로 어떻게 엮여갈지 저는 미처 알지 못하지만, 기도 가족과 함께 기뻐하고 탄식하며 소망하고 싶은 마음으로 편지를 씁니다.

“이런 면에도 복음이 적용되는지 몰랐어요.” 한 대학생이 한 말입니다. 당연하게 여겼지만 악순환을 반복하던 자기관리 방식이 얼마나 왜곡된 인간상에 기초해 있는지, 그리고 예수님이 새로이 주신 정체성 안에서 자신이 얼마나 변화되고 자유로울 수 있는지 처음 깨닫고 눈을 반짝이던 모습이 참 멋졌습니다. 라브리에는 예수님을 믿는 손님도, 믿지 않는 손님도, 또는 둘 중 하나라고 말하기 애매한 손님도 옵니다. 하지만 이미 예수님을 우리 죄를 용서해 주시는 ‘구원자(Savior)’로 받아들인 사람들도, 예수님을 세상 만물과 우리 인생의 ‘주(Lord)’로 받아들이지 않는 부분이 있습니다. 평소 매일 성경을 묵상하고 기도하더라도 특정 부분에선 실제적 불신앙(unfaith)의 삶을 붙들고 있곤 합니다. 그것이 돈이든, 관계든, 사회적 관습이든, 침대 위에서 일어나는 일이든 스마트폰 안에서 일어나는 일이든 간에, 이 영역만큼은 하나님과 무관하게 살아갑니다. 혹 여러분도 이런 영적 사각지대를 갖고 계신지요?

어떤 때는 이런 사각지대가 막연한 불안이나 의심으로 드러나기도 합니다. 은연중에 이런 문제는 하나님께 맡기기엔 너무 사소하거나 거대하거나 수치스럽거나 막막하다고 느낄 수 있습니다. 지난 몇 주간 라브리에선 용기를 내어 자신의 고민들을 기독교의 관점으로 탐구하고 실천해 본 손님들 덕분에 매일매일 흥미진진했습니다. 시간에 쫓기다 온 손님은 모든 시간을 주님께 맡긴다는 것에 대해, 끊임없는 자본 축적에 지친 손님은 돈과 일에 대해 바른 대답을 찾고 돌아갔습니다. 또한 사회와 교회 안의 비인격적인 ‘진도 빼기’에 회의를 느낀 손님은 누림과 쉼에 대해, 최고의 결과물이 돼야 한다는 압박을 받던 손님은 우리의 유한함과 서로 의지하는 관계에 대해 생각을 정리하는 시간을 가졌습니다.

한 대학생은 서로 대화를 나누다 보니 자신이 원하는 삶은 진심으로 소통하는 세상이라는 것, 그리고 스스로가 그러한 관계를 힘들어하면서도 갈망한다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 그래서 2주간 공부하여 티타임에 「어려운 대화 하는 법」이라는 에세이를 발표했습니다. 긴 분량이었음에도 지루할 틈 없이 아주 진솔하고 알차서, 그 자리에 함께한 모두에게 감동과 생각거리를 안겨주었습니다. 이 손님은 그날 밤 실제로 소중한 사람들과 어려운 대화를 시도해 보았는데, 바라던 것보다도 훨씬 좋은 반응을 얻었습니다. 손님도 튜터도 너무 감사한 마음에 한동안 눈물과 웃음이 멈추지 않았습니다.

라브리를 올해 두 번째로 찾은 연대 공대 기도 모임은 자신들의 고민인 ‘미디어’를 그저 고민 상태로 두지 않고, 성경적 관점에서 분석하고 심지어 미디어 중독으로부터 공동체를 지켜주는 앱을 개발하여 발표하였습니다. 이어서 몇십 개의 질문을 싸 들고 와서 시간 가는 줄도 모르고 열띤 대화를 이어갔습니다. 이들의 문제 인식, 실천력, 그리고 서로를 향한 지지에 박수를 보냅니다.

물론 라브리 간사들이(특히 새내기인 제가) 모든 질문에 적절한 대답을 줄 수 있는 것은 아닙니다. 때로는 부끄럽게도 손님이 정직한 대화를 나누는 데 의도치 않게 방해가 되기도 합니다. 변명의 여지가 없습니다. 그러면서도 손님이 저희의 못남을 관대하게 용서하고 인내하도록 마음을 녹이시고, 저희의 실수로 손님이 부적절한 내용을 접하게 되었음에도 (놀랍도록 그 내용만 쏘옥!) 잊어버리게 하시는 성령님의 역사에 전율하곤 합니다.

또한 간사들이 지쳐 있을 때 하나님은 다른 사람들을 통해 라브리에 더 시기적절한 도움을 주기도 하십니다. 올여름엔 유독 서로 잘 배려해 주시는 장기 손님들 덕분에 얼마나 든든하고 기뻤는지 모릅니다. 헬퍼로 수고한 성준-미라 부부, 중희-소리 부부, 채은 님에게도 진심으로 감사합니다. 탁월한 음식과 따뜻한 환대, 시시때때로 손님들에게 필요한 것을 챙겨 주는 모습이 큰 감동과 힘이 되었습니다. 우리 안에서 늘 일하시며 하나님의 기쁘신 뜻을 위해 일할 마음과 힘을 주시는 하나님께서(빌립보서 2:13), 올여름 땀과 눈물로 고군분투한 모든 이들을 기억하시고 더 친밀하게 함께하시기를 기도합니다.

그러나 우리가 주님 앞에 질문을 내려놓고 그분에게서 답을 찾았다 해도, 그 후의 여정이 마냥 꽃밭인 건 결코 아닙니다. C.S. 루이스의 『스크루테이프의 편지』 북위크는 기독교인이 빠지기 쉬운 함정을 뼈저리게 느끼는 시간이었습니다. 상사 악마가 부하 악마에게 인간을 유혹하는 법에 대해 조언하는 내용의 편지를 중간중간 함께 읽고 토론했습니다. 루이스의 시대를 초월한 통찰력과 모임장 정인영 선생님의 유쾌명쾌한 인도(베트남에서부터 일부러 날아와 맹활약하였습니다), 그리고 참가자 총 19명의 솔직함과 개성이 시너지 효과를 내어 참 잊지 못할 추억이 되었습니다. 매 책 모임마다 “이거 내 얘기인가?” 하며 양심에 귀 기울이는 손님도 있었습니다.

악마는 지어내지 못하는 ‘사심 없는 즐거움’을 맛보기 위해 11편에 나오는 ‘내장과 양파’ 요리와 코코아를 직접 먹어 보기도 했습니다. 17편에서 영감을 받은 「취향과 기독교」 강의와 미니 콘서트에서 마음을 저미는 바이올린 연주를 들려준 김종원-이지혜 부부의 방문도 뜻깊었습니다. 마지막 밤에는 서로 소화하고 실천하고 싶은 내용을 자유롭게 발표했는데, 차분하게 생각을 나눈 10대 손님들도 있고, 『스크루테이프의 편지』를 한 편 더 쓴 사람도 있고, 한국 라브리 최초로 갱스터 랩을 선보인 손님도 있었습니다.

올 여름학기와 북위크에 다녀가신 손님들의 캐리커처(?). 외국인 손님들이 한국 이름을 외우는 걸 도우려고 여러 명이 보드에 얼굴을 그리기 시작했는데, 어느새 라브리에 다녀간 사람들을 기억하는 소중한 공간이 되었습니다.

많은 사람이 뜨끔한 것은 26번째 편지에 나오는 ‘아량 싸움 망상증(generous conflict illusion)’입니다. 한 예로, 상대가 차를 마시자고 할 때 자신은 상대를 ‘위해서’ 양보한다고 생각합니다(“난 별로 생각 없지만 당신이 원하면 마실게”). 하지만 상대 역시 나에게 양보하려 하면, 도리어 나의 희생을 알아주지 않는다는 생각에 ‘자기 의’가 상하여 화가 나는 경우랄까요.

루이스는 “애당초 다른 사람을 행복하게 해 주기 위해 자기 이익을 포기하는 게 아니라, 이기적인 사람이 되지 않기 위해 이익을 포기”하는 형식을 갖추게 하는 게 사탄의 전략이라 말합니다. 마음의 중심에 ‘비이기적인 나의 자아’가 자리한 셈이지요. 그 밑에는 지옥의 철학, 즉 “하나의 자아는 다른 자아와 별개”, “누군가 얻는 게 있으면 다른 누군가는 잃은 게 있는 법”, “‘존재한다’는 것은 곧 ‘경쟁한다’는 뜻”라는 원칙이 도사리고 있습니다(18번째 편지).

하지만 하나님 나라의 법은 다릅니다. “한 자아에게 좋은 것은 다른 자아한테도 좋은 것”이란 원칙, 곧 넘쳐흐르는 하나님의 사랑이 세상을 하나로 묶어 줍니다. 각 사람은 뚜렷이 구별되면서도 서로 의지하고 섬기고 협력하는 관계이지요. 예수님을 주(Lord)로 받아들인다는 것은, 무의식적으로 약육강식과 이기주의의 법을 따르던 것을 그만두고 예수님과의 연합 안에서 내 삶의 의미와 희망이신 그분을 늘 바라보는 것은 아닐까 생각해봅니다.

Book Week on C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters: After final discussions

Dear L’Abri praying family,

How are you doing in this sweltering summer heat? Perhaps because L'Abri is located deep in the mountains, the weather fortunately cools down after sunset. Now that the term ended, the workers have been enjoying evening walks in the front yard. As we walk to the chorus of crickets, we are reminded of the stories that linger in every corner of L’Abri. From the guest who arrived exhausted but left with a bright smile and a warm hug for us, to the guest who departed heartbreakingly silently, to the members of the ‘Dog Feeding Club’ who diligently set out every evening—new stories have piled up one after another this summer. Although I do not yet know how the anxieties and questions brought by each guest will be woven into God’s grand story of salvation, I am writing this letter with the desire to rejoice, lament, and hope together with our praying family.

“I didn’t know the Gospel applied to this aspect, too,” said one college student. It was truly wonderful to see her eyes sparkle as she realized, for the first time, how her self-management mindset—which she had taken for granted but which had perpetuated a vicious cycle—were based on a distorted view of humanity, and how much they could be transformed and freed with a new identity in Jesus. At L’Abri, we welcome believers, non-believers, and everyone in between. However, even those who have already accepted Jesus as the “Savior” who forgives our sin have areas in which they do not accept Him as “Lord” of all creation and of our lives. Even if we meditate on the Bible and pray every day, we often cling to a life of unfaith in certain areas. Whether it’s money, relationships, social customs, what happens in the bedroom, or what goes on in our phones—in these specific areas, we live completely apart from God. Do you, too, have such a spiritual blind spot?

At times, these blind spots manifest as vague anxiety or doubt. We may feel that such issues are too trivial, too immense, too shameful, or too overwhelming to entrust to God. Thanks to guests who bravely wrestled with their questions and concerns from a Christian perspective, these past few weeks at L’Abri have been wonderfully vibrant. One rushed guest learned to surrender her time to the Lord, while another, drained by the pursuit of early wealth, found clarity on money and work. A guest wearied by impersonal “box-checking” within society and the church reflected on enjoyment and rest, and another burdened by the pressure to be ‘the best outcome’ took time to organize thoughts on human finiteness and interdependence.

One college student realized that the life she truly desired was one of genuine connection—something she deeply yearned for, yet found incredibly difficult. So, after studying for two weeks, she presented an essay titled “How to Have Difficult Conversations” during tea time. It was so honest and insightful that it moved everyone present and gave us all a lot of food for thought. That night, she actually gathered the courage to have a difficult conversation with her loved ones, and the response was far more positive than she had hoped. Overwhelmed with gratitude, both she and her tutor could not stop crying and laughing for quite some time.

A prayer group of engineering students from Yonsei University visited L'Abri for the second time this year. Rather than just stopping at concern over the dangers of media, they analyzed it from a biblical perspective and even developed and presented an app designed to protect their community from media addiction. Following this, they brought dozens of questions and engaged in a lively discussion that we all lost track of time. I applaud their initiative and their support for one another.

When the workers are exhausted, God sometimes provides L’Abri with timely help through others. This summer, we were deeply encouraged and delighted by our long-term guests, whose exceptional consideration for another set a wonderful tone. I also sincerely thank Sungjun and Mira, Junghee and Sori, and Chaeun for their hard work as helpers. Their excellent food, warm hospitality, and constant care for the guests’ needs were deeply moving and gave us strength. I pray that God, who is always at work within us, giving us the desire and the strength to do what pleases him (Philippians 2:13), will remember all those who labored hard this summer, and be with them in an ever more intimate way.

Yet even if we lay our questions before the Lord and find answers from him, the journey that follows is by no means a bed of roses. Our Book Week on C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters made us acutely aware of the pitfalls Christians are so prone to falling into. The book is about a senior demon advising a junior demon on how to tempt humans. It was C.S. Lewis’s timeless insight, the cheerful and brilliant guidance of our group leader In-young Jung a.k.a. the Jolly Beggar (who flew all the way from Vietnam to be with us!), and the honesty and uniqueness of all 19 participants that together created a truly unforgettable memory. At every book meeting, there were guests examining their consciences, asking, “Is this about me?”

To taste the “disinterested” pleasures that the devil cannot invent, we actually tried the “tripe and onions” and cocoa mentioned in Letter XI. The visit from the couple Kim Jong-won and Lee Ji-hye was also meaningful; they blessed us with a soul-stirring violin performance at a mini concert and a lecture titled “Taste and Christianity,” inspired by Letter XVII. On our final night, we freely shared ideas that we wanted to digest and put into practice. There were teenage guests who calmly shared their reflections, someone who wrote an additional chapter of The Screwtape Letters, and another guest who performed gangster rap—a first in Korean L’Abri’s history!

Sketches (?) of our guests from this summer term and Book Week. People started drawing faces on the board to help international guests memorize Korean names, and it has somehow turned into a cherished space to remember everyone who has passed through L'Abri.

What struck a chord with many people is the “generous conflict illusion” mentioned in Letter XXVI. For example, when someone suggests having tea, we think we are yielding for the other person (“I’m not really interested, but I’ll have it if you want”). However, if the other person also tries to yield to us, we actually get angry—our self-righteous pride is offended because we feel our sacrifice went unappreciated.

Lewis states that Satan’s strategy is to flatten love to a mere form, where we “surrender benefits not that others may be happy in having them but that he may be unselfish in forgoing them.” In essence, the focus is placed on our own unselfish self rather than the other person. Beneath this lies the philosophy of hell: the principles that “one self is not another self,” “[w]hat one gains another loses,” and that “‘[t]o be’ means ‘to be in competition.’” (Letter XVIII).

However, the law of God’s kingdom is entirely different. The principle that “[t]he good of one self is to be the good of another”—that is, the overflowing love of God—binds the world as one. Each person remains distinctly unique, yet we exist in a relationship of mutual dependence, service, and cooperation. Accepting Jesus as Lord, I think, is to abandon our unconscious habits of selfishness and the survival of the fittest. It is to live in union with Him, always fixing our gaze on the One who is the meaning and hope of life.

We eagerly await writings born out of what you have personally read, thought about, and written in your own voice, rather than AI. Please refer to The Gospel Coalition's guidelines regarding the use of AI. Please prepare a presentation of 20–25 minutes (4–5 pages of A4).
- Registration: Currently, we are accepting pre-registrations only for presenters. If you are interested in presenting, please email registration@labri.kr by September 26 (Sat). A preliminary Zoom meeting is scheduled for the fall.

I would also like to ask for a few prayers:

That guests and staff who have visited L'Abri may live with gratitude, patience, and joy, obeying Jesus in all areas of their lives.
That the workers’ health may be restored so that they may serve the guests more wisely, and that God may soon send new workers.
The costs for surveying and obtaining permits to expand the memorial garden have placed a significant strain on L'Abri’s finances. Please pray for God's adequate provision, and that the plans to expand Baegam-dang will move forward prudently.

I conclude this letter with thanks to Jesus, the Lord of the universe and of us all. “For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living” (Romans 14:8–9). I pray that every moment and every sphere of our lives may become a doxology in itself.
