라브리 기도 가족 여러분 안녕하세요?
부활의 계절 봄이 왔습니다. 겨울의 얼었던 땅에 뿌려진 검은 퇴비는 새 농작물을 키워낼 영양을 듬뿍 주고 있습니다. 작은 논밭의 경운기 소리 역시 새 생명을 일구기 위한 반가운 움직임입니다.
도시에서 태어나 도시에서 오래 살았던 저는, 이곳 설악산 기슭 양양에 와서 매우 의아하게 생각하는 것이 있습니다. 그것은 매년 봄이 되면 씨를 뿌리고 가을이 되면 열매를 거두어들이며 일상 속에서 죽음과 부활을 경험하면서도 예수님의 죽음과 부활을 믿는 사람들이 많지 않다는 것입니다. 오히려 자연의 이치를 잘 모르는 도시에는 예수님을 믿는 사람들은 많은데 말입니다. 아마 자연에서 보다도 사회 속에서 더 죽음과 부활을 느끼는가 보죠.
바울 사도는 이렇게 말합니다. “어리석은 자여 네가 뿌리는 씨가 죽지 않으면 살아나지 못하겠고, ... 죽은 자의 부활도 그와 같으니 썩을 것으로 심고 썩지 아니할 것으로 다시 살아나며, ... 우리가 흙에 속한 자의 형상을 입은 것 같이 또한 하늘에 속한 이의 형상을 입으리라.”(고린도전서 15:36-49)
부활과 관련된 가장 멋진 설명 중 하나는 프란시스 쉐퍼의 「진정한 영적생활」에 있습니다. 여섯 가지로 나뉜 것을 세 가지로 요약하면 다음과 같습니다. 첫째, 그리스도는 ‘역사 속’에서 죽으셨고, ‘역사 속’에서 살아나셨습니다. 둘째, 우리는 그리스도를 우리의 구주로 영접했을 때 그리스도와 합하여 ‘역사 속’에서 죽었으며, 그리스도가 다시 오실 때에 ‘역사 속’에서 살아날 것입니다. 셋째, 우리는 믿음으로 그리스도와 함께 이미 죽은 것처럼, 그리고 죽은 자 가운데서 이미 살아난 것처럼 살아야 합니다.
쉐퍼의 말이 제 가슴에 와 닿은 것은 부활이 철학적이거나 심리학적인 것이 아니라 실제로 역사 속에서 일어난 사실이라는 점과 처음 믿을 때에만 예수의 죽음과 부활이 효과가 있는 것이 아니라 현재 우리의 생각과 삶 속에서 마치 우리가 이미 과거에 죽어서 천국에 갔다가 부활하여 다시 돌아온 것과 같은 태도로 살아야 한다는 점입니다. 천국에서 하나님 앞에 설 때에 이 세상의 자랑과 권세가 무슨 의미가 있을까요? 우리는 이미 죽었다가 다시 죽은 자 가운데서 살아난 것처럼 지금 현재의 삶을 순간순간 믿음으로 살고 있습니까?
예수를 오래 믿은 사람이라면 예수님과 함께 죽었다가 부활한 사람처럼 변화된 생각과 생활을 할 것 같지만 그렇지 않은 경우가 많습니다. 오히려 생각이 더 복잡하고 서로 충돌되는 세계관들로 인해 좌충우돌할 수 있습니다. 우리 중 어느 누구도 완벽한 기독교 세계관을 가지고 있는 사람은 없습니다. 그러나 하늘의 지혜는 접어두고 눈에 보이는 세상의 흐름을 따라가려는 청년들을 보면 가슴이 아픕니다. 죽었다가 다시 살아난 사람처럼 멋지게 사는 것은 고사하고 죽을 줄도 모르고 달려가는 행렬에서 뒤쳐질까 봐 안간힘을 쓰는 청년들을 어떻게 도와줄 수 있을까요?
매년 3월은 연중 가장 손님이 적은 시기이지만, 올 봄에는 짧게 머무는 손님들이 많았습니다. 그 중에 학습연구를 위한 안식년을 맞아 찾아온 남예 선생님과 몸이 아픈 가운데 진로를 찾기 위해 온 명인씨, 그리고 헬퍼로 수고한 인주씨가 비교적 오래 머물렀습니다. 남예씨가 연구년 동안 기독교 세계관으로 교육의 기초를 튼튼히 쌓을 수 있도록 기도해 주십시오. 아픈 몸을 가지고 젊은 날을 보내고 있는 명인씨는 병을 가지고도 부활의 삶을 멋지게 살아내도록 또한 진로를 위해서도 기도해 주십시오. 오랫동안 헬퍼로 라브리의 구석구석을 돌보아 온 인주씨는 이전의 무신론자의 입장으로 돌아가거나 세상이 좋아서 하나님을 등지는 일이 없도록 간절히 기도해주십시오.
이충성 씨가 4월부터 간사로 일하게 되었습니다. 몇 년 전에 라브리에 와서 예수님을 믿은 후에 바리스타로 일도 하고 철학 전공으로 대학을 마쳤습니다. 충성씨는 자신과 같은 사람들을 돕고 싶은 마음으로 간사가 되었다고 합니다. 천장에서 물이 새는 바람에 지난 한 해 동안 별채 공사를 많이 했는데, 하나님께서 이충성 간사를 거기에서 일하도록 인도 하셨음을 새삼 깨닫고 영광을 돌립니다. 이제부터 여러분의 기도에 충성 간사를 기억해 주십시오.
김진성 김슬아 선교사 가정은 아인이가 초등학교에 들어가고 루아는 유치원에 다닙니다. 이안이도 많이 자랐습니다. 이 가정은 양양의 봄을 맞아 텃밭도 가꾸고 이레(개)가 새끼를 낳으면 돌보아줄 준비도 하며 들떠 있습니다. 아빠엄마가 라브리에서 공부하는 동안 온 가족이 행복한 추억을 많이 만들도록 기도해주십시오.
저희 부부는 4월 8일 – 13일에 네덜란드 라브리에서 열리는 국제라브리회의에 참석할 예정입니다. 필요한 경비가 채워져서 안전하게 다녀오도록 기도해 주십시오. 무엇보다 회의기간 동안 인간의 계획이 아닌 하나님의 뜻이 이루어지도록 기도해주시기 바랍니다.
라브리의 재정을 위해서도 계속해서 기도해 주십시오. 가족은 늘어난 반면 재정은 어렵습니다. 특히 연말정산에 대한 세금제도가 바뀌었는데, 헌금이나 기부금에 대한 과세가 헌금에 어려움을 주고 있는 것 같습니다. 그러나 라브리를 돕는 여러 손길들을 보내주셔서 위로가 됩니다. 별채 2층에 사시는 모두리 집사님은 봄이 되자 이곳저곳에 꽃과 나무를 심느라 바쁘게 움직이고 계시고, 고영진 집사님은 많은 시간을 내셔서 트리하우스 내부를 아늑하게 고치고 계십니다.
기도로 헌금으로 또 몸으로 수고하는 이들만 아니라 하나님의 웅장한 계획을 거역하는 악한 인간들까지도 사랑하시는 하나님을 다시 생각해봅니다. 아들 예수님은 인간들을 대신하여 자발적으로 죄를 지고 돌아가셨으며, 아버지 하나님은 그 예수를 다시 살리셨습니다. 그리하여 인간에게 구원의 길을 여신 것이지요.
그러나 하나님은 웅장한 계획으로만 끝나지 않으시는 분입니다. 흔히 말해 디테일(작은 세세한 부분)도 완벽하게 갖고 계시는 분입니다. 저희 라브리만 보더라도 하나님은 당신의 계획을 수행하시기 위해 기도로 헌금으로 또 몸으로 수고하는 분들을 준비하셨고, 그 외에도 집과 꽃과 나무와 심지어 나른한 봄날의 잠에 취해 있는 개와 고양이들까지 준비하셨습니다. (그림이 떠오르시나요?) 길을 잃어버린 한 사람을 위해 하나님은 이 모든 것을 준비하신다고 합니다. 언제나 효율성을 따지는 인간과는 정 반대로 아낌없이 사랑을 다 퍼붓고 그것도 모자라 주변에 있는 모든 필요한 자원을 다 사용하시는 분이 하나님이시라니 감사할 뿐입니다.
기도가족과 저희들 모두가 하나님의 이 구원의 역사 가운데 성숙해 가는 한편 하나님께 사용되는 영광을 누리는 축복을 누리시기 바랍니다. 여러분의 순간순간의 선택 가운데, 여러분의 생각 가운데, 여러분이 하는 모든 것에서 부활의 생명을 누리시기를 기도합니다.

양양의 봄바람을 담아 박경옥 올림

Dear L’Abri praying family,
It is spring, the season of resurrection. We have spread manure on our recently thawed garden in preparation for another year of fresh vegetables. Nearby fields are alive with the sound of tillers, welcoming new life into the world.
Having lived in the city for many years before moving to Yangyang, I find it puzzling that people in this rural town have so much difficulty believing in the death and resurrection of Christ. After all, they experience death and rebirth every year in the fields they sow with their own hands! Isn’t it ironic that city folks, who live so far away from the cycles of nature, seem to be more open to the good news? Perhaps, I suspect, our wretched society is even more effective than nature is in reminding people of the reality of death and making them yearn for true resurrection.
As Paul said: “How foolish! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies... So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable... As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven. And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man.” (1 Corinthians 15:36-49)
One of the best explanations of resurrection that I’ve read can be found in Francis Schaeffer’s True Spirituality. Schaeffer tells us that the Christ died in history and lived again in history. When we accept Christ as our Lord and savior, we become one with Him and die in history like him. But when He comes again, we will be resurrected, in history, just like he was. Therefore, we should live our lives in faith as befit those who had already died with him, and as if we have already been born again with him.
Schaeffer’s words touch me because he emphasizes that resurrection is not merely a philosophical concept or psychological effect, but a true event that is part of our history. He also teaches us that the death and resurrection of Christ not only has an effect on us at the moment we first believe, but also guides our daily lives and thoughts. We should live as if we had already died and were returned to this world! How meaningless, then, are the prides and powers of this world when we stand before God in Heaven? We shall live by faith alone, as we have personally been there and back again.
We tend to assume that a person who has been a Christian for a long time will have changed his thoughts and life. But this is often not the case. A long-time believer can actually be even more confused, because he has too many conflicting thoughts and worldviews. None of us is able to have, and live according to, a perfectly Christian worldview. Yet it pains me to see so many young men and women give up the task altogether, shun the heavenly wisdom, and resort to following the trends of this visible world. Instead of living the life of someone who has died and lived again with Christ, they are too busy keeping up with a world that doesn’t even know that death is upon it. They need our help, but how should we help them?
In our branch, March is usually the month with the fewest visitors. We’ve had many short-term guests this term, but a few people managed to stay with us a bit longer. NamYe, a schoolteacher, spent a part of her sabbatical at L’Abri. Please pray that she will use this opportunity to learn what the Christian worldview has to say about education. MyeongIn came to think about his career while battling many illnesses. Please pray that he will not let his physical handicap dissuade him from living a full life as a born-again Christian. Inju, our valuable helper for quite some time, has now returned home. Please pray that he will not also return to loving the world more than God.
ChungSeong Lee will join us as a full-time worker from April. He became a Christian a few years ago at L’Abri, and has since graduated from college (he majored in philosophy) and worked as a barista. He says he applied to work with us because he wanted to help people like him. Only now do we realize that all the construction we had to do in the old gas station building last year, which we blamed on a leaking pipe at first, was in fact God’s preparation for ChungSeong to live and work there. Please remember him in your prayers from now on.
JinSeong and Sul-Ah are enjoying their time at L’Abri. Their eldest daughter, Ain, started elementary school and Rua is in kindergarten. Ian, the boy, has grown a lot, too! The children are excited to try their hands at gardening and care for Ireh’s newborn puppy. Please pray that they will make many happy memories in Yangyang while their parents study here.
InKyung and I will be attending the Members’ Meeting in Dutch L’Abri from April 8 to 13. Please pray for the expenses and a safe trip. Please especially pray that God’s will, not human plans, will prevail throughout the proceedings.
Please continue to pray for our finances. Our family has grown, but money remains tight. Recent changes in the Korean tax law seem to be discouraging people from making gifts. Nevertheless, we are thankful for all the help that we have been getting. Duri, who rents the upper floor of the old gas station building, is busy planting trees and flowers all over L’Abri. Mr. Ko, our friendly neighborhood carpenter, has put his skills to the unfinished tree house to finally make it nice and cozy.
We love you who help us with your prayer, gifts, and volunteering, but God loves even those who disobey and oppose his great plans. For such people Jesus volunteered to die on the cross, and for such people – for us – the Father brought Him back from death. God planned our salvation and carried out his plans with meticulous care. But not all of God’s plans are epic in scale. He also looks after the tiniest details. For L’Abri he prepared not only your prayers and gifts but also the house, the flowers and trees, and even the dogs and cats who slumber on our doorstep on this warm spring day. For a single lost lamb, God prepares all of this. Unlike us who always fret about efficiency, God pours overwhelming love into his plans and does not stop at anything. We are so thankful that we have such a great Father.
I pray that this history of salvation will play out in the lives of each and every one of you, so that you may mature in your faith and bask in the glory of being used as a part of God’s plan. I pray that you will enjoy the new life that God has given us, in the choice you make every moment, in your thoughts, and everything you do.
